Alemão (literally German) (born 2 March 1989) is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Vicenza Calcio in Italy. He nicknamed German because it was a common nickname for people with blonde hair. His real name is José Carlos Tofolo Jr., a Portuguese given name José Carlos and Italian surname Toffolo.

Biography

Alemão started his career at Santos, which he signed a contract with club since 2005.[1] He made his first team debut in 2008 Campeonato Paulista, as starting forward against Grêmio Barueri,[2] due to the injury of Kléber Pereira.[3] He also scored his first goal for the team in the next match, which eventually 1–1 draw with Paulista FC.[4] In July 2008 he was signed by Serie A club Udinese on a reported free transfer[5] or a reported performance based fee.[6] However, he failed to register in Lega Calcio as the club did not had a extra non-EU signing quota (for signing players from abroad)[7] Udinese signed Ricardo Chará, Dušan Basta, Alexis Sánchez and Odion Ighalo that season but only the last 2 were officially registered in the League Office. Santos also submitted a new contract to Brazilian Football Confederation BID-E system to document a new contract which last until 2011 on 28 July. In June 2009 he officially became a player of Udinese and never played for Santos in 2008 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A nor 2009 Campeonato Paulista.

With Udinese, he played for its Primavera under-20 team as overage player.[8] In July 2010 he was sold to Serie B club Vicenza in co-ownership deal.[9] Alemão made his professional debut in Italy on 20 August 2010, the first round of 2010–11 Serie B. He substituted Alain Baclet in the 66th minute. That match Vicenza losing to Atalanta 0–2.[10]

On 31 January 2011, he was swapped with Marco Cellini of Varese.[11][12]
